Our Blog

Hey all you jewelry lovers, April and I wanted to inform you a little bit about the metals we use in our jewelry. If you or anyone you know has an allergy to certain metals on your skin, you definitely should read this informative blog. Have you ever bought silver jewelry called German Silver? If so, you really purchased Nickel Silver. Some may have allergies to Nickel metal.

When I first got my ears pierced, I had no idea about metal allergies. I purchased some silver toned earrings from the mall and started wearing them right away and soon (within a day) my ears started itching and swelling. I found I could only wear gold or sterling silver. I now know about Argentium silver and fine silver. Some people are even allergic to Sterling Silver because it contains other metals such as copper or nickel, but many are able to wear Argentium and fine because it does not contain allergenic metals in the alloys.

How do I store and clean my Silver?

Storing your fine and sterling silver jewelry in a container, cloth or plastic zipper bag will keep the silver looking bright. Use a silver polishing cloth or silver polish to periodically clean your silver. Be sure to wipe jewelry with a damp cloth after cleaning and dry thoroughly.

On our website we have small white polishing cloths in 10 packs that clean sterling silver to a shine. Soon we will have Sunshine Polishing Cloths for sale as well.

Sterling silver is an alloy of silver containing 92.5% by weight of silver and 7.5% by weight of other metals, usually copper. The sterling silver standard has a minimum millesimal fineness of 925.

Fine Silver is purer than Sterling Silver. It is 99.9% pure silver. This silver, due to it's purity is softer than  Sterling Silver. On the other hand, due to it's purity, it is highly resistant to tarnishing.

1. It's whiter than standard sterling silver. Argentium sterling silver is made with more germanium than traditional alloys. It is virtually tarnish-free. It requires way less polishing.

2. It's purer than standard sterling silver. While sterling contains 92.5% silver, Argentium contains a minimum of 93.5% silver. Higher Purity = Greater Value.

3. It's a green metal. In response to demand for the preservation of our natural environment and natural resources, Argentium is always made from 100% recycled silver.

4. It's good for your skin. If you've had problems wearing silver or other white metals before, you should be safe with Argentium. It's hypoallergenic and 100% nickel-free.

Gold-filled, or gold overlay, is made by heat- and pressure-bonding a layer of karat gold to a brass (or other base metal) core.

Gold-filled jewelry is economical. You will enjoy the warm tones of gold at a fraction of the cost of pure gold.

The Good Samaritan

The Good Samaritan

Today, a dear sweet lady we know shared an April Shelley Jewelry story that excited us because it made her life so much easier and most likely made someone else's day too!

April had made her a key chain tag which had the lady's name on one side and her phone number on the the other. She was in a hurry one day and accidentally dropped her keys in the parking lot on her way in. A gentleman had found her keys and called the number on the back of the key tag and Voila! Before she even realized she had lost her keys, they were back in her possession! There are good Samaritans all around us, but they can only do so much. It is a very smart idea to have a key tag on your keys in case you lose them. You will make it easier on the good Samaritan as well!
